McAfee, Inc. Catches More Spam, Malware and Malicious Web Sites Than ...

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) today announced that its McAfee(R) Secure Internet Gateway appliance outperformed Barracuda Networks' products in several tests. Head-to-head testing conducted by Network Testing Labs shows that McAfee's single-appliance Secure Internet Gateway is eight times more effective at blocking malicious Web sites, six times more effective at blocking spam and more than four times more effective at blocking malware than the combination of Barracuda Spam Firewall and Web Filter Appliances.

"These results confirm what our customers tell us -- McAfee's product is much more effective than competitive alternatives," said Jack Marsal, director of product marketing for McAfee. "Our goal with Secure Internet Gateway is to provide unrivaled protection against Web and e-mail threats all in a single appliance that is simple to install and manage-saving our customers time, money, and hassle."

Network Testing Labs looked for the ability to identify and block malware (such as viruses, spam, phishing attempts, keystroke loggers, browser hijackers, adware, rootkits, dialers, data miners, and Trojans).

Norton Internet Security AntiSpyware Edition

Protect yourself from viruses, spyware, spam, and other Internet threats.

Protect yourself from viruses and remove spyware with this utility. Norton Internet Security 2005 AntiSpyware Edition differs from rival programs in a number of ways. For one thing, it includes Norton AntiVirus, one of the oldest and most popular anti-virus programs. The program also blocks worms from entering your computer. The program detects and removes both spyware and adware, helpfully identifying non-threatening adware that's needed to run programs you want. The program's privacy control prevents personal information from being sent out without your knowledge. The utility's AntiSpam feature filters out unwanted email. Finally, the program offers a personal firewall that blocks Internet threats.

Note: The beta for this product has been discontinued, so the current version is shareware and costs $80 if you wish to register it.

Court blocks request to shut Spamhaus domain

A U.S. judge has denied an order that would have suspended the domain name for The Spamhaus Project, averting a potential quagmire over how U.S. legal rulings apply across the global Internet.

Spamhaus, a group of computer security experts based in London, creates a database used by security vendors to block unsolicited bulk e-mail, known as spam.

Last month, an e-mail marketing company, e360 Insight, won an $11.7 million judgement against Spamhaus in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois. The ruling also called for Spamhaus to remove e360 from its blacklists.

Spamhaus, which has been sued in the U.S. several times, typically ignores the rulings. It says U.S. courts do not have jurisdiction over it since the group is based in the U.K. Spamhaus maintains that e360's e-mail constitutes spam and violates U.K.
